What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Therapy for women

What is EFT?

According to ICEEFT, "Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a unique and highly effective form of therapy that helps people understand and improve their emotional connection with themselves and others. EFT was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson in the 1980s. EFT Consultation is based on the principle that our emotions are central to our experiences and relationships. It suggests that we are naturally designed to have a secure sense of who we are and a sense of self we can trust and rely on. This solid base allows for strong, supportive bonds with others, and when these bonds are secure, we tend to be happier and healthier."

There are three branches of EFT:

EFCT-Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy

EFIT-Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy

EFFT- Emotionally Focused Family Therapy

Why Choose EFT?

The answer lies in the evidence. EFT is one of the most extensively studied models of couples therapy in the world. Multiple randomized controlled trials have demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing relational distress, increasing relationship satisfaction, and building genuinely secure emotional bonds between partners. Any skilled Relationship Therapist practicing EFT uses this research to guide their work.

But EFT is not just effective; it is deeply humane. Rather than focusing on conflict resolution techniques or communication formulas, EFT gets beneath the surface of arguments to the emotional needs and attachment fears driving them. A Relationship Therapist trained in EFT helps partners understand each other at a deeper level; not just what they are saying, but what they are feeling and needing beneath the words.

The result is not fewer arguments alone. It is a fundamentally different kind of relationship; one built on emotional safety, mutual responsiveness, and authentic connection. This is the goal of every service at Secure Attachment Solutions.

Emotionally Focused Therapy Consultation

EFCT is a complex model of therapy with many "right" paths to help couples transform their relationship. Due to this complexity, it is helpful to seek consultation to make the model more digestible and to expand your knowledge and experience in order to best help your couples.
